Xiaomi is facing some challenges with its position in the market as the brand looks to reinvent and evolve across categories. But the smartphone segment has been its bread and butter in India, especially with the affordable and popular Redmi series. <\/span><\/p>\n

And now we get the Redmi 15 that looks to chart the usual path for the brand and deliver a value-for-money offering, something that we haven\u2019t seen in a while. The company is promising a new approach for its budget lineup, with use of the latest silicon carbon battery tech giving us a device that stretches beyond the usual standards. <\/span><\/p>\n

But for Rs 14,999 do you get the basics or something extra that tilts the balance in its favour? We will give you the answer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s Tall But Not Brawny<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first thing you notice with the Redmi 15 is that it is tall and has a wide ratio profile. This means you get a 8.4mm thick device that weighs well over 210 grams but still manages to impress with the dimensions.<\/span><\/p>\n

You know how? <\/span>The new silicon carbon based 7,000mAh battery packed inside it. It can be unwieldy for one hand use but the design aspect is well covered with a stylish finishing on the plastic back panel. A few years back we wouldn\u2019t have called a phone priced at Rs 15,000 as budget but times have changed.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, with that you also get better looking phones these days and Redmi 15 doesn\u2019t do too bad in that regard. It also gets IP64 rating for some level protection against dust and water splashes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Big Display But Bright?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The display on the Redmi 15 is a huge 6.9-inch IPS LCD panel with support for 850 nits of peak brightness and 144Hz refresh rate that can be switched manually.<\/span><\/p>\n

The unwieldy nature of the device means using it with one hand will be a challenge, especially for those with small hands. However, a large screen opens up the prospect of watching movies, videos and enjoying the experience to some extent even with FHD+ resolution. <\/span><\/p>\n

The screen gets decent visibility under sunlight which berates the numbers quoted by the brand and that\u2019s a good thing. The colours don\u2019t exactly pop out like the AMOLEDs but do a decent job of delivering pleasant tones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Hardware Nature<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Redmi 15 is a budget phone and Xiaomi has made no qualms about that. You get last year\u2019s Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 chipset with 8GB RAM in tow. The performance is strictly decent, which means the regular tasks are handled well but anything beyond that will be a strain on the device.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can play casual games at mild graphics settings but that\u2019s about it. The hardware brings some benefits but most of them fit in the \u2018budget phone\u2019 bracket.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You get it paired with the HyperOS version based on Android 15 and the device will be offered 2 OS upgrades and 4 years of security updates. The software has plenty of pre-loaded apps, the default apps that you can\u2019t delete and them pinging notifications. The OS very much reminds you of the MIUI experience in this segment which has been tweaked to bring the HyperOS-ness into the platform.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cameras Work?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, the dual rear camera setup of 50MP wide main sensor (downgraded from 108MP) along with a depth sensor show some of the quality that people seek from a phone in this range. The colour accuracy is definitely appreciable but the details feel lacking which can become an issue after a point.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trying anything with a level of zoom also renders the images look average but that\u2019s pretty much the standard in this range. You seem to be getting versatility for the sake of it and that could be improved with the next version.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 8.4mm dimension will never make you feel that a phone can have a 7,000mAh battery but that\u2019s what Redmi 15 achieves with the help of silicon carbon grade technology. And with that on board, this phone can easily last for a day and a half with some fuel in the tank just in case you are stranded for a while. Neither the chipset or the overall hardware is power-hungry and giving efficiency means the large battery can handle most tasks effortlessly without making you anxious.<\/span><\/p>\n

We often talk in terms of hours with phone batteries, but here, the optimisation lets you use the narrative around days. The unit gets 33W charging support which is neither too fast nor too slow. You also have 18W reverse wired support which effectively makes this a phone-cum-power bank.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Redmi 15 is huge but handles the heft quite well thanks to the silicon carbon battery tech which allows the brand to pack a 7,000mAh battery which delivers. The display is bright enough without being very crisp, and the hardware holds up for the regular tasks. <\/span><\/p>\n
