India has overtaken Japan to become the third-largest producer of solar energy globally, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said on Thursday, according to a report by news agency PTI.<\/p>\n

Citing data from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the minister noted that India generated 1,08,494 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of solar power, surpassing Japan\u2019s 96,459 GWh output. The figures mark a significant milestone in India\u2019s clean energy journey, PTI reported.<\/p>\n

IRENA, a global body dedicated to energy transformation, supports international collaboration and provides data and analysis on technologies, policies, innovation, finance, and investments related to renewable energy.<\/p>\n

\u201cIndia has outpaced Japan in solar energy generation, producing 1,08,494 GWh compared to Japan\u2019s 96,459 GWh, and is now the world\u2019s third-largest solar power producer,” Joshi said in a post on X, as quoted by PTI.<\/p>\n

He attributed the achievement to the \u201cvisionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” stating that India is leading the way in the global clean energy revolution.<\/p>\n

Currently, according to a report from Tracxn, a market intelligence platform, there were 297 active Renewable Energy Tech companies in India as of May 2025. The other encouraging development in this area has been Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), particularly in green start-ups, which has given this sector a huge kick start. This has been further boosted by the government allowing 100 per cent FDI in the renewable energy sector with no requirement of prior approval. According to Ministry of Commerce and Industry estimates, FDI in this sector grew 50 per cent year-on-year in FY 2023-24. Till Q3 of FY 2024-25, India\u2019s renewable energy sector attracted FDI of $3.4 billion which is equivalent to the total FDI inflows for the entire FY 2024.
