Another layoff at Google and the culprit is AI! 200 workers were replaced by tech giant with the AI after they protested low wages, poor work, and pay conditions. These workers were hired to assess and train Google\u2019s AI products \u2013 the Gemini chatbot.<\/p>\n

According to the report of Wired, Google fired around 200 employees last month in two rounds of layoffs.<\/p>\n

The Wired report said that the employees were mostly Hitachi-owned GlobalLogic and were tasked to train Google\u2019s Gemini chatbot to sound sharper and \u201chuman”. Along with that, they were told to rewrite responses and to work on Google\u2019s web browser \u201cAI overviews”.<\/p>\n

Wired reported that it had obtained internal Google documents revealing the company was using human evaluators to train its AI system to automatically assess the quality of its responses\u2014reducing the need for ongoing human review. Current employees confirmed this, expressing concern that they were essentially training their replacements.<\/p>\n

Google Doubles Down On AI<\/h3>\n

As Google doubles down on artificial intelligence, CEO Sundar Pichai has urged employees to boost productivity and efficiency during what he called a phase of \u201cextraordinary investment.” In an internal meeting, an audio recording of which was obtained by CNBC, Pichai said the company needs to adapt to the AI transition without a proportional rise in headcount.<\/p>\n

Anytime you go through a period of extraordinary investment, you respond by adding a lot of headcount, right? But in this AI moment, I think we have to accomplish more by taking advantage of this transition to drive higher productivity,” Pichai told employees. He stressed the need to be \u201cfrugal with our resources” and emphasized that he remains \u201cvery optimistic” about Google\u2019s current performance.<\/p>\n

Google beat Wall Street estimates for quarterly revenue and profit on the back of new AI features and a steady digital advertising market. Moreover, Google increased the capital spending plan on the back of high demand in cloud computing services to $85 billion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
