But doctors warn that the process of bone loss begins much earlier than most women realise. By the age of 30, women may already be at risk of osteopenia, the precursor to osteoporosis \u2013 a condition where fragile bones are prone to fractures in the spine, hip, and wrist.<\/p>\n<p id=\"1\" class=\"story_para_1\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news18.com\/lifestyle\/health-and-fitness-osteoporosis-prevention-and-treatment-understanding-risk-factors-8966299.html\">Osteoporosis<\/a> occurs when bones lose density and quality, becoming fragile and prone to fracture. Nowadays, women over 30 are at higher risk of osteopenia (early bone loss) and osteoporosis. Women\u2019s bones naturally begin to lose density after reaching peak bone mass in their late 20s,&#8221; explains Dr. Sumit Batra, Orthopaedic and Joint Replacement Surgeon, Marengo Asia Hospital, Faridabad.<\/p>\n<h4>Why Bone Loss Accelerates After 30<\/h4>\n<p id=\"2\" class=\"story_para_2\">The biological clock of bone health ticks faster than many imagine. \u201cWomen achieve their peak bone mass by the late 20s. After 30, bone-building slows, and natural bone breakdown overtakes new bone formation,&#8221; says Dr. Naman Goel, Sr. Consultant \u2013 Orthopaedic, Accord Super Speciality Hospital, Faridabad.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3\" class=\"story_para_3\">The decline becomes more pronounced around menopause, when estrogen levels dip sharply. Dr. Batra points out, \u201cThe average woman loses approximately 10 per cent of her bone mass within the first five years after menopause.&#8221; Early menopause, especially before 45, raises the risk by 25\u201345 per cent.<\/p>\n<h4>Lifestyle and Medical Risk Factors<\/h4>\n<p id=\"4\" class=\"story_para_4\">Beyond hormones, today\u2019s lifestyles are compounding the problem. \u201cLong sitting hours at jobs, lack of sunlight, junk food, and sedentary routines put younger women at risk of early bone loss,&#8221; warns Dr. Batra. Autoimmune diseases, diabetes, steroid use, and hormonal disorders affecting menstruation also contribute.<\/p>\n<p id=\"5\" class=\"story_para_5\">Dr. Goel adds, \u201cMultiple pregnancies, breastfeeding without adequate nutrition, smoking, alcohol, and calcium- or protein-deficient diets add to the problem. The danger lies in their silence. Osteoporosis often shows no symptoms until fractures occur.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4>Protecting Bones Early<\/h4>\n<p id=\"6\" class=\"story_para_6\">The good news is that osteoporosis is preventable. Doctors recommend weight-bearing exercises, calcium- and protein-rich diets, and 15 minutes of daily sunlight exposure. A DEXA scan after 40, or earlier if risk factors exist, can catch bone loss in time.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7\" class=\"story_para_7\">Medications and hormone therapies are available, but prevention and early intervention remain key.
