Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s visit to poll-bound Bihar next week, the cabinet committee on economic affairs on Wednesday gave its nod to two major Infrastructure projects worth Rs 7,616 crore in the state.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chaired by Modi, the committee approved the construction of a four-lane greenfield access-controlled Mokama-Munger section of the Buxar-Bhagalpur high-speed corridor and the doubling of Bhagalpur-Dumka-Rampurhat single railway line section (177 km) in Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are committed to further accelerate the economic development of the state with the expansion of connectivity in Bihar. In this regard, today our government has approved the Mokama-Munger 4-lane Greenfield section. This will save travel time and also create new employment and business opportunities,” Modi said in a post on X.<\/span><\/p>\n

WHAT IS THE MOKAMA-MUNGER GREENFIELD PROJECT?<\/h4>\n

The Mokama-Munger project will be a four-lane greenfield access-controlled section of the Buxar-Bhagalpur high-speed corridor in Bihar.<\/span><\/p>\n

The project will be built under hybrid annuity mode (HAM) with a total length of 82.4 km at an estimated cost of Rs 4,447.38 crore. It passes through or provides connectivity to important regional cities such as Mokama, Barahiya, Lakhisarai, Jamalpur, Munger connecting to Bhagalpur.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Munger-Jamalpur-Bhagalpur belt in eastern Bihar is emerging as a key industrial region focusing on ordinance factory, locomotive workshop (in Jamalpur), food processing (for example, ITC in Munger) and related logistics and warehousing hubs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bhagalpur stands out as a textile and logistics hub, led by Bhagalpuri silk while Barahiya is emerging as a region for food packaging, processing and agro-warehousing.<\/span><\/p>\n

The increased economic activity in the region is expected to drive up the freight movement and the traffic on the Mokama-Munger section in the future. The four-lane access-controlled corridor with close tolling, supporting average vehicular speeds of 80 kmph with design speed of 100 kmph will reduce the overall travel time to approximately 1.5 hours, while offering safer, faster, and uninterrupted connectivity for both passenger and freight vehicles.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to government estimates, the project will generate about 14.83 lakh man days of direct employment and 18.46 lakh man days of indirect employment.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe project will also induce additional employment opportunities due to increase in economic activity in the vicinity of the proposed corridor,” the government said.<\/span><\/p>\n

WHAT IS THE RAILWAY PROJECT?<\/h4>\n

The cabinet also approved the doubling of Bhagalpur-Dumka-Rampurhat single railway line section (177 km) in Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal at an estimated cost of Rs 3,169 crore.<\/span><\/p>\n

The enhanced line capacity will improve mobility, providing enhanced efficiency and service reliability for the Indian Railways.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe multi-tracking proposal will ease operations and reduce congestion, providing the much-required infrastructural development on the busiest sections across Indian Railways. The projects are in line with the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji\u2019s vision of a New India which will make people of the region \u2018atmanirbhar\u2019 by way of comprehensive development in the area, which will enhance their employment\/self-employment opportunities,” the government said.<\/span><\/p>\n

PM MODI\u2019S VISIT ON SEPTEMBER 15<\/h4>\n

Bihar deputy chief minister Samrat Choudhary said Modi will be in Bihar\u2019s Purnea district next week to inaugurate an airport and launch development schemes worth around Rs 45,000 crore.<\/span><\/p>\n

Choudhary spoke to journalists after reviewing preparations for the Prime Minister\u2019s tour scheduled on September 15.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cModi, in the presence of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, will declare the airport open for routine flights, which has been a long-standing demand of the people of the area. Purnea airport boasts of the largest runway in Bihar,” Choudhary said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Notably, the airport will be the fourth in the state after Patna, Gaya and Darbhanga. Private air carrier Indigo has announced that it will be running three flights a week between Purnea and Kolkata.<\/span><\/p>\n

Choudhary said Modi has so far launched development projects worth close to Rs 1.5 lakh crore in Bihar.<\/span><\/p>\n
