India\u2019s star batter Suryakumar Yadav will captain the national side for the first time in a multi-nation competition when he leads the team at the Asia Cup 2025.<\/p>\n

Now, as the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 looms on the horizon, the Asia Cup offers him his first real test in managing pressure, rotating squads, and handling the demands of a multi-team environment.<\/p>\n

When asked whether leading India in a high-stakes multi-nation competition brings additional challenges compared to bilateral series, Suryakumar responded in his trademark witty style.<\/p>\n

\u201cTill now everything is going alright sir, toh kyu bina matlab ka ungli karna hai? (Why unnecessarily meddle?) We will continue to do and follow the same things we have done in all of the bilaterals so far. If some things are working, that means we are moving in the right direction,” he said at the captains\u2019 press conference ahead of the tournament.<\/p>\n

Impressive Start as Captain<\/strong><\/p>\n

Suryakumar has enjoyed a stellar run as India\u2019s permanent T20I captain so far. Under his leadership, India have lost just two of their 15 matches, beginning with consecutive series wins against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, followed by a 3-1 series victory in South Africa.<\/p>\n

The 34-year-old also admitted he was amused by suggestions that India were \u201crunaway favourites” to lift the Asia Cup.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho told you this? I did not hear this. Yes, we are playing T20 cricket as a team after quite some time, but we were here early,”<\/p>\n

Suryakumar remarked with a smile.<\/p>\n

India\u2019s Road Ahead<\/strong><\/p>\n

India\u2019s opening group-stage clash against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will also mark their first white-ball game since the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final in March.<\/p>\n

The UAE contest will allow team management to test combinations before the marquee September 14 clash against Pakistan, which is expected to be one of the tournament\u2019s highlights.<\/p>\n
