India witnessed the year\u2019s second and final lunar eclipse on Sunday. Not only was it a total eclipse, but it was also the biggest since 2022, and it was visible across the country. From a scientific lens, an eclipse is purely an astronomical event with no connection to death or funerary practices. Yet, cultural traditions often prompt families to wait until the eclipse ends before performing such rituals.<\/p>\n

Among Hindus, the period of \u2018Sutak\u2019\u2014the inauspicious hours during an eclipse\u2014is strictly observed as the celestial event unfolds.<\/p>\n

This year, the eclipse coincided with the beginning of Pitru Paksha, rendering it inauspicious. Adding to that, the \u2018Mrityu Panchak\u2019\u2014 a five-day period considered dangerous in astrology\u2014began on September 6 and continues till September 10. Since the eclipse overlapped with Mrityu Panchak, it is believed to carry greater negative energy.<\/p>\n

This raises a sensitive question: What if someone passes away during a lunar eclipse? How should the last rites be performed?<\/p>\n

What Is Mrityu Panchak?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Astrology mentions different types of Panchak (five-day periods), such as Raj Panchak, Agni Panchak and Mrityu Panchak. Among them, Mrityu Panchak is seen as the most dangerous.<\/p>\n

This year, it runs from September 6, 11:21 AM to September 10, 4:03 PM. During this phase, performing auspicious activities is avoided.<\/p>\n

What If There\u2019s A Death During The Eclipse?<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to religious traditions, an eclipse is an inauspicious and sensitive time. Weddings, rituals, and religious ceremonies are strictly avoided.<\/p>\n
