Lola Tung is opening up about the lessons she\u2019s learned from starring as Belly Conklin in Prime Video\u2019s hit series The Summer I Turned Pretty. As the show nears the end of its third and final season, the 22-year-old actress reflected on how portraying Belly helped her navigate love, friendships, and self-growth.<\/p>\n

Before landing the role, Tung remembered reading Jenny Han\u2019s beloved novels while studying at Carnegie Mellon University. \u201cThere was a really dramatic single tear that rolled down my cheek,” she said. \u201cI love this world so much. If I wasn\u2019t in this show, I would watch this.” The series follows Belly as she experiences adolescence, love triangles, and life-changing decisions, culminating in a dramatic season 3 where she gets engaged to Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) but still struggles with lingering feelings for Conrad (Christopher Briney).<\/p>\n

Tung on Dating and Independence<\/strong><\/p>\n

Despite her onscreen romantic chaos, Tung admitted that her personal love life is a little more grounded\u2014and complicated. \u201cIt\u2019s hard out here,” she quipped. \u201cI\u2019m not an apps girl. They\u2019ve always scared me, even in my college days. My friends would be like, \u2018Let\u2019s play Tinder,\u2019 and scroll through their Tinders. I\u2019d be like, \u2018OK, I\u2019ll just look over your shoulder.\u2019”<\/p>\n

Tung emphasised that her approach is slow and intentional. \u201cI\u2019m of the mindset of, \u2018it\u2019ll happen if it\u2019s right,\u2019” she shared. \u201cI\u2019m hyper-independent, which is good and also sometimes not great. But some men need more time to grow, which is what we also learned from Summer. We\u2019re so quick to try to rush things in life. One of my friends was like, \u2018I can\u2019t wait until we\u2019re in our 30s and we\u2019re\u2026 whatever.\u2019 But I\u2019m like, \u2018Don\u2019t rush it! We\u2019re 22. We can take our time.\u2019”<\/p>\n

Lessons from Belly Conklin<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lola also explained how her character has shaped her perspective on friendship and personal growth. \u201cI had these pillars in my life \u2014 cousins, my family, Taylor, Jere,” she said. \u201cThey made me feel like I was safe, like I was on solid ground. Now they\u2019re gone. And it\u2019s just me.” Fans will see Belly meeting new friends\u2014and possibly a new love interest\u2014in the upcoming season. The teaser hints at a dramatic moment as Conrad\u2019s voice says, \u201cDear Belly,” leaving viewers wondering what the future holds for her first love.<\/p>\n

Through it all, Tung emphasised the importance of embracing flawed, realistic characters. \u201cSometimes you\u2019re frustrated with them, but you keep watching because it\u2019s so raw and interesting,” she said, reflecting both on her character and her own life lessons.<\/p>\n
